Today, let’s listen to IU’s song “바람”, which literally means “Wind.” I just heard this song for the first time a few days ago, and I think there’s a lot worth sharing. If you can understand and apply the key points I’m about to go over, I believe your voice performance will reach a whole new level. And that’s right, this isn’t just about singing—these techniques can also help you sound better when speaking, whether it’s for work, studying, public speaking, presentations, or even content creation like social media and podcasts.
Alright, I’ll play the song while we chat about it.

She sounds so smooth, natural, and relaxed. A lot of people feel like their voice is too tight or strained when they sing or speak and wonder why they can’t sound as effortless as IU. Many assume that singers can have loud, powerful voices, so they instinctively push their volume and force their vocal cords. But in reality, that actually makes the voice tense and tiring.
If you watch IU closely, her volume is just like she’s talking to someone right in front of her.

I’ve always felt that singing is about communicating with the audience, not just showing off your skills. So when you sing or speak, think of it as telling someone something, rather than trying to "perform." And when you use a volume that feels just right for someone in front of you, you would naturally fall into your best vocal range easier.
Your vocal cords are actually quite small—they don’t need a ton of force to vibrate and produce sound. That’s why a relaxed approach often helps you find your most natural, pleasant-sounding voice. It’s also what makes professional voices sound so smooth. Try speaking lightly, and feel how relaxed and pleasant your voice can be.

Now, let’s listen to another part of the song.
When you need to be louder, you should increase volume smoothly in a way that follows your best natural soudning voice, rather than forcing it out by shouting.
Next, I want you to notice another key trait in IU’s voice. This technique can make your voice sound way more professional and is one of the biggest differences between amateurs and pros—the smooth flow of the voice.
I call this “one strength, one line,” which means carrying a whole or part of a sentence in one breath.
As you sing or speak, your mouth shape naturally changes from word to word within a sentence. And we want to make sure that every word is seamlessly linked, and traveling on a single continuous breath. And that breath you’re using? It’s just the natural air you exhale when breathing normally—you don’t need to force it or train your lung capacity.
When you do this, your words sound fluid and connected. Let me show you an example:
하루가 시작된 거리 그 틈 속에서
The day begins on the streets, in those little spaces in between.
바람이 불어들 때
When the wind starts to blow in.
가슴 아팠던 날들 기억을 타고 와
The painful days come back, carried by memories.
스르르 미소가 되지
And quietly turn into a smile.
아무도 만질 수 없는 기억의 바람
The wind of memories that no one can touch.
변해가는 거리에 다시 불어오면
If it blows again on these ever-changing streets.
잠시 손을 흔들어봐
Just wave for a moment.
이루지 못한 채 멀어진 꿈들에
At the dreams that faded away before they came true.
This smooth, connected flow makes a huge difference whether you’re singing or speaking. It’s what makes voices sound natural, effortless and professional—people will find your voice pleasant probably without even knowing why. Try it out for yourself!
So, to sum up today’s key points:
✅ Start your voice gently — don’t force it.
✅ Use a volume that feels like talking to someone in front of you.
✅Let your voice flow naturally through each part of your sentence in one breath

These three techniques can instantly improve your voice performance. But the most important thing is to sound natural and immersed in what you’re saying. Whether you're singing or speaking, don't think of it as a "performance"—think of it as sharing something with your audience.
Once you achieve that, you can level up even further—by improving lyric interpretation, eye contact, imagery, emotional expression, facial expressions, and body language. These elements help your audience connect with you on a deeper level.
This is also a key part of my voice performance coaching—helping you become natural and immersive first, then adding the right vocal techniques so you can sound both natural and professional.
